Broughton Park 17 Widnes 20
2:14pm Thursday 22nd December 2011
WITH several games falling casualty to the bad weather, Widnes took full advantage to move up into second place in North One West, and allowing themselves a quick opportunity to look back on a job well done so far.
The ground staff - who did a sterling job to get the pitch fit - must have wished they hadn’t bothered as the visitors quickly built up an 8-nil lead, with an individual try and a penalty from Kevin Leadbetter.
However, the home side were soon back in it, as their big pack got O’Donnell over the line to score close enough for Duffy to convert .
Back came the visitors though, and full back Andrew Riley showed his pace to chip ahead and re-gather before racing 40 metres to score. Widnes then lost a player to the sin bin and Duffy converted the penalty to make it 15 – 10 at half time.
Shortly after the restart, Park failed to find touch from a penalty, and Widnes quickly swung the ball along their back line, for Dave Welsh to score wide out.
When Widnes had a further player sin-binned and then had another red-carded it looked bleak for the visitors as Mitchell immediately crashed over and Duffy converted to set up a grandstand last 20 minutes.
However, they visitors were clever and alert enough to be able to quickly re-organise themselves and close the game down as Park battled to get a winning score.
