Last year’s finalists Moorfield and Avon eliminated from Widnes Cup
3:09pm Wednesday 18th August 2010
WHAT a difference a year can make in football.
Last year’s finalists – winners Moorfield and runners up Avon Athletic - both find themselves out of the competition.
While Moorfield went out as bottom of the group Avon were overturned by a spirited Halebank who were all but out with Avon leading the group going into the third round matches, their defeat and Boroughs win took Borough to the top of the group.
This weekends semi finals will definitely produce goals with nine goal heroes St Michaels, who take their tally to 14 scored in the comp are facing a much improved Halebank who had a slow start but came good in the end Thirteen goals to their credit take on last gasp heroes Cronton Villa who overcame a much spirited Widnes Parklands albeit in the dying minutes of the match.
So the scene is set for a feast of football this weekend, two of the three previous winners are still in the competition in St Michaels (once) and Cronton Villa (3times) with previous runners up Halebank (3 times) and Halton Borough (once) making up the numbers.
Group 1: St Michaels 9 Village 0 St Michaels ensured that they finished top of the group with a emphatic win over the Village.
Goals came from man of the match Mike Holland, 4, Mike Colebrook, 3, Mike Flanagan and Paul Derbyshire.
Man of the match for St Michaels was four-goal hero Mike Holland.
Widnes Parklands 3 Cronton Villa 4 Parklands gave their Premier League opposition a good test and were unlucky to not progress to the semi finals, but Cronton showed character to keep their heads to the very end.
Man of the match for Cronton Villa was James Flannagan.
Man of the match for Widnes Parklands was forward Anthony Randall.
Group 2 Halebank 1 Avon Athletic 0 A superb advertisement for Widnes Football - Halebank narrowly scraped through in an extremely tense match with a winner takes all game.
Halebank were on balance the better team in the first half and on balance got just their just deserts when Nick Ellis was upended in the box with a clumsy challenge he then converted his own penalty past Matty Connor in the Avon nets.
Man of the match for Halebank was Lee Woolham.
Halton Borough 6 Moorfield 1 The Man of the Match for Halton Borough went to hat trick hero Chris Bickerstaff.
The Man of the Match for Moorfield went to Ben Price for a spirited performance in an unfamiliar role.
Semi final fixtures for Saturday 21 August: St Michaels v Halebank at St Michaels, Halton Borough v Cronton Villa at Halton Borough’s Ground. 3 PM kick off.
