Widnes school scores rugby hat trick

TALENTED rugby players at a Widnes school have scored a hat trick.

For the first time in the history of SS Peter & Paul Catholic College, three year groups, seven, eight and nine, are through to the North West Carnegie Champion schools final.

Proud PE teacher Nick Buckton said: “I have been teaching here for 27 years and it is an achievement that has never been matched before.

“To get one team in the final is fantastic, but to get three, is an unbelievable achievement.

“The credit lies with the lads, they have put hours of hard work in at training and now they are getting their rewards for all that hard work.”

The school wants to thank Kurtis Marsh, Widnes Vikings community coach, and volunteer coachs, including Andy Attwood, for their dedication in training the squads.

The finals are at Stobart Stadium. Year seven compete against St Peters, Wigan, at 5pm on Tuesday, February 28, and year eight take on Great Sankey, Warrington, at 6pm.

Year nine play St Peters at 6pm on Thursday March 1.
